A History Lesson for Gloria Rodgers
First
I would like readers to know that I titled my article "Are You
A Democrat Or An American?" with the same implication as "Are
You A Man Or A Mouse?" It would behoove all Democrats to take
a long hard look at their party's leadership, sponsors and allies
and ask: "Are these really the people I want to represent me?"
If, like Ronald Reagan, you find that the Democratic Party has left
you, be assertive. Either kick the radical faction out of your party
or go your own way.
After reading my first article, Gloria Rodgers states: "Mr. Crawmer
seems to be advocating a one-party political system which of course
would render this country something less than a republic." Well
Gloria, why don't you quote me verbatim before you present your argument?
When you respond to what I "seem" to be advocating, you
simply expose your incomprehension. A one-party system is not what
I am advocating - although I don't see how that would render us less
than a republic. I am advocating among other things, that Democrats
cease and desist the advocacy of policies that run contrary to a republican
form of government. We are not a democracy.
She goes on to suggest that James Madison was a member of the Democratic-Republicans
and that the Democratic party is the oldest political party in America.
She then suggests that I take a history lesson. Well, I have. Madison
(after whom I named my youngest son) was a Federalist. He wrote most
of the Federalist Papers, along with Hamilton and John Jay. It was
when Hamilton was Secretary of State that Madison became leader of
a congressional faction known as "Madisonians" which later
became the "Jeffersonians" and ultimately "Republicans".
True, they initially called themselves democratic Republicans. But
when the Federalists campaigned against them, they emphasized the
adjective "democratic" in a pejorative way causing them
to drop the term. They created their political party in 1791 with
great trepidation. It was generally believed by statesmen at the time
that political parties could lead to tyranny. These are facts that
I can support.
But lets say for the sake of argument that a party known today as
the Democratic Party, was Madison's party. Madison once said: "If
we advert (turn attention) to the nature of republican government,
we shall find that the censorial power is in the people over the government,
and not the government over the people." Can anyone truthfully
say that today's Democratic Party bears any resemblance to Madison's
principle? I am very concerned about the way all political parties
have evolved through time. There was a time when "liberal"
was not a pejorative term (I was young and JFK was President). There
is plenty of evidence that the evolution of the Democratic and Liberal
parties has been the result of foreign socialist influence, "a
communist plot". The fact that Michael and Gloria find this amusing
is evidence of their unwitting complicity.
In further response to Michael Roland's claim that we must be a democracy
because Democrats and Republicans alike are advocating democracy around
the world, I will posit my belief that we do not advocate republicanism
abroad because that actually would make us the imperialists that many
of our foreign and domestic enemies accuse us of being. A republic
may not be the best form of government for other peoples. We advocate
democracy (as a process) around the world to empower the citizens
of oppressed states to choose a form of government (not necessarily
a republic) that suits them uniquely. We do not advocate that citizens
of other nations form A democracy or A republic. Now I think I have
been very clear. Let's see if you can twist that into something you
can argue with.
I have been debating Liberals and Democrats for a good many years
and I just want the likes of Gloria Rodgers and Michael Roland to
know that I have heard it all before. Your arguments are tired. Your
party is where all the losing ideologies of the world have sought
refuge; the socialists, collectivists, Marxists, communists, as well
as humanists, statists et al. They have debased America, as they are
free to do. They are not Patriots. They openly scoff at those of us
who are. I have written what I and a growing number of Americans know
to be the truth. If you don't like it, you are free to change what
tomorrow's truth will be. But, try as you and Bill Clinton might,
you cannot change the truth that is.
