Public Education - Who's Fault? 8/15/99

There is a lot of truth in Dan Lynch's August 15th article about the "Politics of charter schools". He even gave us an accurate description of the relationship between the teacher unions and the Democratic Party, although he skillfully avoided mention of the role of left-wing Liberal ideology in the development of curricula.

I do not agree, however with his assessment that the failure of public schools is due to "horrendous social conditions". He actually has reversed the order of culpability. Public schools were ostensibly created to improve our nation's social conditions. It is their failure over many decades, which have created the poverty, and the crime-ridden neighborhoods, not vice versa. It is a proven fact that whole language is responsible for generations of illiteracy, and that illiteracy, as well as secular humanism, are contributing factors which lead to a life of crime.

Government has invaded the sovereignty of the family, and demolished our independence in educating our children. I find it outrageous that after violating our right to choose and severely limiting our responsibility for our children, people like Dan Lynch would attempt to hold us responsible for the consequences. These are the same people who insist on promoting the ill named "right to choose", the epitome of irresponsibility, when it comes to abortion.

He may not like the fact that Republicans are offering solutions to the shortcomings of public schools but where else can concerned parents turn for help? If government is going to compel citizens to attend government schools, how are we going to keep politics out of it? The only way we can prevent politicians from using government schools as a political football is by getting the government out of the business of education. It is inevitable that Democrats, despite all their desperate machinations, are going to loose control of education. If they were smart, not to mention pragmatic, they would take Senator Moynihan's advice and trump the Republicans by embracing school choice before they simply become supplanted.
